Frequently Asked Questions


Q: When does the fall soccer season begin?

A: The 2017 Fall Recreational Season tentatively begins with practices the second week of August (depending upon field work and uniform delivery) and ends the last week of October. Traditionally, the first games of the season are held the weekend before Labor Day. For 2017, the first week of games will be held on August 26th.


Q. What does the ‘U’ stand for in the age group?

A: The ‘U’ stands for “under the age of”.  The U4 age group for example will consist of players all under the age of 4 years old.


Q. How early can my child begin playing soccer?

A:  BGYSA begins with an U4 age division.  Your child must turn 2 years old before January 1, 2017.  This will be a developmental program which involves fun and games within the scope of soccer play.  The children will hopefully develop some independence while having fun on the soccer field.



Q: What days are games played on?

A: All games will be scheduled for Saturday but may be held on Sunday if games need to be rescheduled due to inclement weather. Games times will vary week to week.



Q: Where are they games played?

A: All games will be held at the BGYSA Soccer Complex located on Route 44 in Glocester.



Q: How long are the game times?

A: Games are one hour in length. For the U4, U5 and U6 age division, the first half hour is practice, and the second half hour is the game.  The U4 and U5 age group will not have formal games but will operate in a developmental format.



Q: How often do coaches practice and where do they practice?

A: U7-U15 -Coaches may hold one or more practices during the week with the time and day being determined by the coach.  All practices are held at the BGYSA Soccer Complex located on Route 44 in Glocester.

U4/U5/U6 – These age groups are not required to have practices during the week, although a coach may choose to have an occasional practice during the week.



Q: Can my child be placed on a team with their friends or a particular coach?

A: While there is a place in the registration system to indicate special requests, such requests should not be considered a guarantee.  Our first consideration is to balance the teams with regards to ability, age and gender (in the case of co-ed leagues).  Circumstances that are always honored are for siblings playing in the same age division; parents coaching their children; and sponsors sponsoring a specific player’s.team. Please review refund policies before registering your player.



Q: Can a child play in an older age division ("play up")?

A: We do not encourage playing up during the Recreational season.  Play up requests must be emailed to recdirector@bgysa.org and include a rationale for the play up request. Any requests will be reviewed and voted on by the Board of Directors. Please note that players who do not play on a competitive team will not be considered for play up.



Q:Are games played during inclement weather?

A: Games are played in the rain but if conditions warrant games to be cancelled, notice will be posted on the BGYSA website and Facebook page. Coaches will also be notified by email as soon as possible. Coaches are to notify their players of cancellations.  Make-up games will be scheduled for a later date but cannot be guaranteed. If games are cancelled due to inclement weather, BGYSA has the options to reschedule on Sundays.



Q: How will I know my child's team assignment and schedule?

A:  Your child's team assignment will be viewable in their GotSoccer player account by August 16th. Team assignments are not posted publicly. Coaches will provide schedules before the season starts and game schedules will be posted on the BGYSA website by August 20th.



Q: When will my child hear from a coach?

By August 16th.  Although we would love to get the information out earlier, but we need to recruit sponsors to cover as many teams as possible, and we need to recruit coaches for the 79 teams we have this year.   If you do not hear from a coach by this date, please contact the Recreation Director at recdirector@bgysa.org.



Q: What is my child provided with from BGYSA?

A: The equipment that is provided to each player is as follows:

-Under 4, 5 and 6 age division: uniform shirt, shorts, socks and size 3 soccer ball

-Under 7 and 8 age division: uniform shirt, shorts and socks

-Under 10 through U15: Uniform shirt and socks



Q: What size soccer ball does my child need?

A: The soccer ball size depends on age division as follows:

-Under 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 age division: size 3 soccer ball

-Under 10 and 12 age division: size 4 soccer ball

-Under 15: size 5 soccer ball



Q: What equipment is needed?

A: Shin guards are required for every practice and every game.  Players may wear sneakers but soccer cleats are recommended. A water bottle should be brought to every game and practice. U7-U15 players must also provide their own soccer ball for practice.



Q: Can anyone coach a team?

A: Anyone can volunteer to coach a recreational soccer team and you don't need to know a lot about soccer to coach. Coach training is provided and coaching resources can also be found on the BGYSA website.   If you would like to coach a team, register online at https://www.gotsport.com/asp/application/reg/Default.asp?ProgramID=47482&Type=COACH. BGYSA had 80 teams last year which means we need many volunteers for a successful Fall Recreational season.



Q: How can I sponsor team?

A: Complete the Sponsorship form and mail it along with the $150 fee to: BGYSA, PO Box 235, Chepachet, RI 02814. Sponsors wishing to support three (3) or more teams pay $400 for the first three teams and $100 for each additional team.



Q: How much is the registration fee and deadline?

A: The registration deadline is June 30th.  Each player will have a mandatory fundraising fee of $5 in addition to the registration fee.

Registrations paid April 8 - May 15, 2017 : $75 (*Family Maximum $190)

Registrations paid May 16-June 30, 2017: $95 (*Family Maximum $250)

Registrations paid July 1 and later: $100 (*Family Maximum $265)

Any registration not paid by June 30, 2017 may have their registration waitlisted. Waitlist registrations will begin June 30, 2017 and team placement cannot be guaranteed.


NOTE: Beginning 8/5/17, payment will be due at time of registration.

*Families registering 3 or more players will be charged no more than the listed family maximum before the $5 per player mandatory fundraising fee.

Registration for fall recreational season will be voided if the family owes any outstanding fees to BGYSA.  Once outstanding fees are paid in full, you must re-register for the fall recreational season.


Q: What is this $5 per player mandatory fundraising fee?

A: The fee this year is for a raffle entry, and is an alternative to raising registration fees. The raffle is for gift certificates for a local business.  Our Club Fundraiser position is currently vacant and we do not have staff to head the fundraising efforts as in past years.



Q: What is the refund policy?

A: Any requests received between April 1, 2017 and June 13, 2017 will be issued a refund of 90% of the registration fee. Any requests received between June 14, 2017 and July 14, 2017 will be issued a refund of 50% of the registration fee.  No refunds issued for requests received after July 14, 2017.

Q: My child would like to referee this year, what do they do?

A: Any child that is 11 years old is eligible to become a referee.  There are mandatory referee classes held (visit RI State Referee Committee for course dates/times). There will be a certification fee involved for anyone wanting to become a referee which is due at the first class.

Referee schedules will be posted on the BGYSA website every week during the season.



Q: Do you post additional information online?

A: Information is posted on the BGYSA website and on Facebook frequently during the fall season. Check the sites often for updated information concerning the recreational program.

Q: How can I help with the Fall Recreational Season?

A: There are many ways to help. The BGYSA recreational program is run by volunteers. We invite you to join us for a memorable experience organizing and executing a great season for our kids.
