U14 Girls Win RI Cup Championship
On Sunday June 24th, the BGYSA U14 girls defeated Chariho 2-1 to take the RI Cup State Title in the Classic Blue Division. The girls capped off a #1 finish in their bracket and Superliga title with this thrilling final match. The team, coached by Don Farias and Chris Lupini, entered the final round after playing CLCF on the 23rd to a 1-1 tie in regulation, 2 scoreless OT periods and winning 3-0 in the shootout round. Grace Decost started the game versus CLCF in the net, with 6 saves and giving up 1 in the first half, adding 7 saves in overtime and 3 saves during the shootout. Liz Coburn defended the goal in the second half of regulation, holding CLCF scoreless and saving 9 attempts. The only goal in regulation was scored by Angelina Lupini with an assist by Tiffany Alves midway through the second half. Janessa Choquette and Angelina Lupini scored their penalty kick attempts and Ellie Farias sealed the victory by scoring on her PK. In the final catch against Chariho, Grace Decost again started the game as the keeper, saving 6 and giving up none. Janessa Choquette scored the only goal of the first half, putting BGYSA up 1-0 at the half. Liz Coburn saved 8 and gave up one as the keeper in the second half, and Ellie Farias scored the game winning goal for the second straight day off of an assist from Janessa Choquette. The defensive unit rallied in the final 8 minutes to shut Chariho down and preserve the 2-1 win. Even more impressive, the team took the Cup with a team of 12 players. Congratulations girls!
